As moms, finding even 5 minutes to ourselves can feel like a luxury. But what if you could use those 5 minutes to make some extra money? Well, in this short 5-minute read, I’ll reveal the essential email copywriting tips that will help you write emails that sell.
What Is Email Copywriting?
Email copywriting is the process of writing email content that persuades people to take a specific action, such as making a purchase, scheduling an appointment, or taking advantage of a special offer.
You probably receive dozens of these emails every day without even realizing it (just check your promotions tab or spam folder!).
Every business, from small e-commerce shops to large corporations, need email copywriters — so the demand is super high. And because email copywriting is such a specialized skill, businesses are willing to pay top dollar for good email copywriters. It’s not unheard of to earn several hundred or even thousands of dollars for just a single email because a good email leads directly to sales.
Plus, you can use your email copywriting skills to land more projects, because cold email is one of the proven ways to get high-paying clients.
Email copywriting is one of the most high-paying and in-demand copywriting specialties, and it’s something that anyone can learn to do. So let’s talk about how to actually get good at writing sales emails, so that you can get results for your clients and get paid the big bucks!
Start With a Strong Subject Line
A subject line is the first thing that someone sees when they receive an email, so it’s important to make sure that yours is interesting and engaging. The entire goal is to make the subject line stand out so the email gets opened. The recipient is likely skimming through an inbox with dozens (if not hundreds) of email messages, so the subject line needs to be eye-catching and make them want to learn more.
The best subject lines are short (usually around 6 words). This is because it will be cut off after a certain number of characters on most email platforms. I’ve also seen a lot of success with 1 word subject lines (just the word “question” tends to do well).
Focus on a pain point or problem that your recipient is facing, and craft a subject line that speaks to that. Using a number or emoji in the subject line has also been shown to increase email open rates too.
Keep Your Email Short and to the Point
While “short” is a relative term, “to the point” is 100% necessary. The secret to good copywriting (of any type) is doing more with less. Long emails can work, as long as every single sentence has purpose. Skilled email copywriters focus on a single goal, and every sentence contributes to that goal.
Emails with 50-125 words tend to perform the best. You want to:
- Make it as easy for the recipient to quickly digest the email
- Show how the solution you’re presenting can help them
- Get them to take the next step
So get rid of any fluff. The more focused your email is, the more likely they will actually do something with it.
Inject Some Personality With Stories
Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools in a copywriter’s toolkit. People connect with stories on an emotional level, and that connection is what drives conversions. It helps humanize a brand from just a faceless company, and it helps the reader actually see themselves using the product or service.
If you can tell a story that’s relatable and resonates with your reader, they are much more likely to take action. This also builds brand trust and loyalty — two vital components of any email list.
Make It Easy for People to Take Action
Every email should have 1 clear call-to-action (CTA) at the end. A CTA is what you want the recipient to do after reading your email (think “click here to learn more”). If the CTA can somehow tie in to the subject line, or even use the exact phrasing from the subject line — it tends to perform better.
Email copywriting is a great way to make money from home, because you can do it on your own time and at your own pace. And once you get the hang of it, you can easily write an email campaign in just a few hours.
