7 Mompreneur Ideas for Creative Women

Are you a mom who wants to stay at home with your kids, but still bring in an income? Or maybe you’re just looking for a creative outlet that can also help you make some money. Either way, there are plenty of opportunities for mompreneurs these days!

The digital world has opened up so many doors for women who want to work from home. And, if you’re a mom, that can be a huge blessing. After all, raising kids is a full-time job in itself! So, if you can find ways to make money that don’t require you to leave the house, that’s even better. If you’re ready to start your mompreneur journey, here are 7 ideas to get you started.

What Is a Mompreneur?

A mompreneur is a mom who runs her own business. The clever blending of “mom” and “entrepreneur” first came into use in the late 1990s, and was even the name of a Canadian magazine.

In recent years, the term “mompreneur” has become more popular as more and more moms are starting their own businesses. And mompreneurship is on the rise because the internet has made it easier than ever to start a business.

There are lots of different ways to be a mompreneur, from an actual store-front selling physical products, to an online business selling services like coaching.

If you can find a business idea that you’re passionate about, it can be a win-win situation – you get to do something you love, and you get to be your own boss!

And what I love is that there are many mompreneur ideas that are perfect for creative women. So let’s dig into them!

Freelance Writer or Editor

Let’s start with my personal favorite (the one that’s made me a 6-figure mompreneur!) – freelance writing or editing. I may be biased, but I believe there are tons of reasons why being a freelance writer is one of the best careers for stay-at-home moms.

If you’re a mom with a knack for writing, this is a great option because it’s so easy to get started and there’s a never-ending demand for good writers. You can work as much or as little as you like, which makes freelance writing a great side-hustle or full-fledged work-from-home career!

You also don’t need to learn a bunch of techy skills to get started (thank goodness). Google docs and email are really all you need in the beginning.

I got started with NO experience 6+ years ago. All I had was a laptop, an internet connection, and a serious drive to quit my crummy restaurant job and make more of myself!

If you want to become a freelance writer, it basically boils down to this:

Step 1: Figure out what you’re good at writing about

Do you have a lot of experience with parenting? Gardening? Cooking? Pets? There are lots of different niches you can write about, so think about what you know best and what you’re passionate about.

Also decide if you want to write content that’s more informative or entertaining (this would be projects like social media posts, blogs, video scripts, etc.) or if you like the idea of using psychology and persuasion to write marketing materials (like email sequences, sales letters,  and website copy).

Step 2: Build a portfolio of your work

Do some research on what kinds of writing projects are out there, and then start working on some samples. If you don’t have any previous work to show, that’s okay! Just write a few pieces on topics you’re interested in, so you can have something to show potential clients.

Step 3: Find clients who need a writer and get paid!

Once you have a small portfolio of samples that you feel really good about, start pitching your services to content managers, marketing managers, editors and business owners.

That’s the simplified version, anyway. But doing this, I was able to land paying clients just 30 days after starting! If you want a more in-depth guide on how to become a freelance writer that follows my exact journey (complete with actionable tips, scripts and a 30-day success planner), I have one here!

Start a Mom Blog and Monetize It

If you enjoy writing and want to share your experiences as a mom, starting a blog is a great way to do it. You won’t have any clients to manage (like you would with freelance writing) and you can pretty much write about whatever you want!

With mom blogs, there are so many different ways to monetize them. The most popular and successful ways are through:

  • Ads (like Google Adsense)
  • Affiliate marketing (promote other people’s products and get a commission on every sale)
  • Selling digital products (like ebooks, courses or templates)
  • Selling coaching or consulting services to your audience
  • Sponsorship deals (where businesses pay you to feature their products or services on your blog)

Keep in mind, creating a blog that gets traffic and makes money takes time, so this isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. Expect to be cranking out content that is search engine optimized (SEO) for 6 months before Google even starts to send you any organic traffic. And plan on 2+ years before your mom blog really starts to generate a consistent income. But if you’re willing to put in the work, it can be so worth it!

Offer Social Media Management Services

With social media being as important as it is for businesses these days, there’s always a need for someone to manage their accounts and create content. If you’re active on social media and have experience with graphic design or video editing, this could be a great option for you.

Now, I should mention that when it comes to social media content, many businesses will want someone who can offer an end-to-end solution. This means not only creating the content, but also coming up with strategies for what kind of content to post, when to post it, and how to grow their following. You’ll need to create graphics or videos for your clients (or outsource that work to someone) and then post the content on their behalf. They may even want you to run ads, so tech skills and learning about the paid-side of social media would be helpful.

So that you don’t get overwhelmed, I recommend picking just 1-2 platforms to specialize in instead of trying to manage them all.

You might focus on:

  • TikTok if you’re an idea generator and have experience with video editing
  • Instagram if you’re good at creating graphics and stories
  • Facebook if you’re okay with writing copy and learning about paid ads
  • Pinterest if you love creating graphics and driving traffic

Social media can be a tough nut to crack. Businesses want to see engagement and growth, but they also don’t want to spend a ton of money on ads. And the ever-changing algorithms can make this really challenging!

That’s why focusing on just  1-2 platforms can be really helpful. You can learn the ins and outs of how each algorithm works and what kind of content performs well on each platform. Once you have that knowledge, you’ll be able to charge higher rates as a specialist.

Launch an Online Course

Tons of mompreneurs these days have hit it big by sharing their knowledge and expertise online through digital courses.

A digital course is basically an online class that you create on a platform like Udemy or Teachable. You can cover just about any topic, from cooking to painting, and photography to calligraphy (and anything else you can think of!).

The great thing about courses is that once you create them, they pretty much run on autopilot. You can make money while you sleep!

But there are some downsides to this mompreneur idea. First, courses can take a lot of time to create. You’ll need to come up with a curriculum, film yourself teaching the material, edit the videos (or outsource that work), and then upload everything to your course platform.

Second, marketing your course can be tough. You’ll need to attract students and then get them to actually sign up and pay for your course. This means having a strong sales page, copywriting skills, and probably running some ads. You’ll need a decent-sized audience before you launch your course. Platforms like Udemy or Teachable make this a little easier because there is a built-in audience. But there’s also a lot of competition, so you’ll need to make sure your course is high-quality and stands out from the rest.

Finally, you’ll need to be okay with the fact that people might not actually like your course. You could put in all this work and then get a bunch of 1-star reviews. It happens! Not everyone is going to love what you create.

But if you’re creative, have some expertise to share, and like being in front of a camera, then creating an online course could be a great mompreneur idea for you!

Become a Brand Strategist

Do you have an eye for design? Are you good at coming up with catchy names and taglines? Do you love working with businesses to help them grow? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then becoming a brand strategist might be the mompreneur idea for you!

As a brand strategist, you’ll work with businesses (usually small businesses or startups) to help them figure out their brand identity. This can include coming up with their:

  • Name
  • Logo
  • Tagline
  • Color scheme
  • Fonts
  • Visual style
  • Brand guidelines
  • Brand persona
  • And more!

Basically, you’re taking a company’s vision and creating the overall look and feel that will resonate with their ideal customers. You’ll need to have a good understanding of design, color psychology and marketing to be successful. You should be a great communicator too, since you’ll be working closely with clients to understand their needs and wants, and you’ll be visually communicating that to their dream customers.

If you have a background in graphic design or logo design, that will definitely help. But it’s not required. As long as you have an eye for design and a knack for coming up with creative solutions, you can become a brand strategist!

Sell Digital Products

Have you ever made a flyer, birthday card, or a custom graphic for social media? If so, then you already have the skills to start selling digital products!

Canva is so easy to use to create all sorts of digital products, like:

  • PDF workbooks
  • Planners
  • Cards and invitations
  • Homeschool activity worksheets
  • Art and wall decor
  • Logos
  • Signs for special events (birthdays, weddings, baby showers, etc.)
  • Social media templates
  • And more!

The great thing about selling digital products is that there is very little overhead. You don’t need to buy any inventory or worry about shipping costs.

An Etsy shop is the main way mompreneurs sell digital products these days. Etsy is an online marketplace where people can buy and sell all sorts of creative things. In the past, there were a lot of handmade items, but now people can instantly download digital products too.

I would say the biggest downside to this is a lot of other moms have discovered this easy way to make passive income, so there is quite a bit of competition. But if you find a gap in the market or create unique products, you can definitely make money selling digital products on Etsy!

Record User Generated Content

From TikTok to Instagram, and every platform in between, video is all the rage right now. And user generated content (UGC) is a big part of that. So businesses are willing to pay people to help them record it.

UGC is simply content that is created by users, not businesses. It’s usually short videos of a real person on-camera showing why they love a product, how it works, or just how it fits into their daily life. It’s a great way to connect with more customers — because what’s more compelling than seeing a real person using and enjoying a product?

If you have a smartphone and some basic video editing skills, then you can start recording UGC for businesses! Check out Fiverr to see how other people are packaging and pricing their UGC services.

Take Photos of Products

If you have a nice camera (or even a nice iPhone!), product photography is an excellent business idea for moms. Unlike other types of photography, you don’t have to travel to weddings or  anywhere else. You can shoot photos from the comfort of your own home, anytime of day.

Product photography is in demand because businesses need photos of their products to use on their website, social media, and other marketing materials. They want high-quality photos that show off their products in the best light possible.

But not everyone has the time or skills to take great photos. You can offer your services as a product photographer to help businesses make their products look as amazing as possible.

Become a Creative Virtual Assistant

If you haven’t heard of a virtual assistant before, it’s basically someone who provides administrative or creative support to businesses remotely. Virtual assistants can do all sorts of things, like:

  • Manage social media accounts
  • Create social media content
  • Design graphics
  • Write blog posts
  • Edit videos
  • Manage email inboxes
  • Coordinate employee schedules
  • And much more

The thing about being a VA is you will get all sorts of different tasks thrown your way. You’ll have to learn lots of different skills and be really organized. It can be stressful to manage a lot of different balls at once…

But it can also be really rewarding to help businesses with the creative tasks that they don’t have time for. Plus, of course, you get to do it from home! And that’s why it’s becoming so popular for moms.

I may be biased, but like I mentioned in the beginning of this article, I believe freelance writing is the best business idea for moms.
